The concept of chanting mantras or prayers has been a tradition in many cultures from times immemorial. Chanting is the continuous repetition of mantras, which are words that uplift your soul. They create vibrations in your spirit and free you from worries. When we chant mantras, we purify our mind and thoughts, which helps reduce negative feelings like anger, frustration, fear, agitation, depression and help us turn inwards. Mantras create a mental response that helps us improve self and divine consciousness, clear and calm our mind and senses, communicate clearly, and absorb positive thoughts and feelings. They're like food for the soul.

When we repeat a mantra, we affirm it to ourselves, allowing its meaning to seep deep into our subconscious mind and help our negative patterns to shift to positive ones. There are many mantras you can chant to make yourself feel good, but the most well known and universal mantra of all is Om, which is an ancient Sanskrit word meditated upon by Rishis. Om is not just a word; it's like music, which crosses the barrier of age, caste, creed, culture and even species and can spoken by anyone. It's more about feeling the essence of the word rather than chanting it. It's made up 3 Sanskrit words: Aa, Au, Ma. It's the first sound of the universe and vibrates at 432 Hz, which is the same frequency at which everything in nature vibrates.

If chanted in the correct manner, Om can penetrate throughout the body so that the sound reaches the centre of one's soul. It creates a vibration within us that matches the cosmic vibration, thus connecting us universally. It helps us gather and focus the mind so that it's not vulnerable to negative thoughts arising within. It helps to align the mind, body, and spirit. There is complete peace, harmony and bliss in this simple but deep sound. This helps each cell of ours activate and connect with other living beings, nature and universe.

To chant Om, sit in a comfortable cross-legged position with spine, neck, head and back upright. Close your eyes, inhale deep and while exhaling, chant OM.

  • For AHH sound, relax the jaw. The lips should be separated, the sound should come from the belly, and the tongue shouldn't touch the palette.

  • In OOH, the lips gently come together as the sound moves from the abdomen towards the heart.

  • During MMM, tongue floats below the roof of the mouth and the lips come together creating a buzz in the head. This phase goes on for twice longer than the others.

  • Repeat this a few times. After the final chant, sit still and feel the vibration of Om permeating the whole body and every single cell.
